2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

when's it ever gonna stop?

Well, even Sean is now in trouble in the actual yard list competition! Another quick walk around the yard yielded Black-throated Green Warbler and Baltimore Oriole. When it rains it pours, I guess. 5 to go before I have tied Sean. Of course, upon his immediate return he is sure to regain the lead, but I will savor it while I own it anyway.

Here is today's Hummingbird. Is it just me or is this the earliest spring migration EVER?

  1. OK Caleb, enough already until I can get out and bird my yard more completely! I added Swainson's Thrush today (58/90). Two BH Vireo as well. If the weather is better tues. a.m. LOOK OUT...I'll be right on your heels!

  5. Been a slow spring here, and not had a migrant over my garden yet (would have easily had Barn Swallow had I spent hours out there, as they do occur not too far away)...Common Swift due any day now.
Did manage to break my rarity-finding duck for 2009, though, in the wider area of Co. Cork, with a 2cy Eurasian Hobby on Sat 25th. This species is becoming increasingly regular in Ireland, though has not (yet) been suspected of breeding here, but finding one is never easy: this being my first self-found Hobby, and only my third individual ever seen in Ireland!
