Yearbird #9 (not a yard lifebird) occurred this afternoon...finally. I check this cluster of three cell towers every day as I've previously found kestrels perched on top. On Monday, FitzPunk found a dude up on top of one of the towers but nothing of the avian kind. If kestrels use cell towers as perches frequently, I wonder how this affects their reproductive capabilities. Yikes!
Double-digits, here I come!
Wow...I actually have a species that none of you other slackers have...
ReplyDeleteThat's a life yardbird for me, and I am going to have to get very lucky to be there when one flies over! Also need RLHA still, and I guess this is a bad year to expect that species...
ReplyDeleteIt could happen Ca-put I've personally seen 8 RLHAs down south here where the tobacco and the sugar cain grows. So they may fly by you on the return trip. Good Bird Booner, it might be a bit of a trick for me to get that too, the closest nesters aren't too too close to my yard.
ReplyDeleteI can't even get a Rough-legged Hawk in my county...this winter sucks for the species. I haven't heard speculations about their numbers yet...Caleb, what have you been hearing?
ReplyDeleteHere's a frequency eBird graph for the last 4 years...looks like this winter is a bit below average

Keep watching those towers and you may just pick up a PEFA (thats what Slag heap did). And as you know there are PEFAs wandering the SW 'burbs of Chicago. All five of my sightings since I moved to IL have been wintering birds and I have no doubt they move widely...
