2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Month of nothing.....well, almost nothing

The site feels a little abandoned ....like a lifeless crapscrape...I mean moonscape. I've had very little yard action in the last month; my second yard INBU (a singing male), and two year birds in the form of Cedar Waxwing and Green Heron (#130).

One interesting bird of note - I've seen a EUCD down the street three times since June 6th directly across the street from a house Chris and I made an offer on when we first moved to Escanaba. I think that's notable for a yardbirding blog in the "near miss" category (for house and bird).

Got my water feature up and running for the first time this season, that shows you my level of motivation.

Bring on the fall warblers, huh Curtis?

  1. Wow. I didn't think resuscitation could feel this good. Thanks for breathing a little life into this thing, Joe.

Nice EUCD find. I would like to say I'm envious, but I'm dealing with too many invasive species right now, so I'd prefer if that one would stay away from here.

The only new bird I've had over the last month was a Cliff Swallow (143) yesterday morning.

The fun of watching the Merlin pair across the street noisily defending territory has made up for the lack of new birds. I've seen them on the tail of Great Blue Heron and Red-tailed Hawk. I am relatively sure of the nest tree, but have been unable to confirm a nest or young. Unfortunately, it has gotten quiet over the last few days perhaps meaning that the young have fledged.

  2. That's pretty solid Kaplan. EUCD are still quite rare up in northern WI, how many UP records are there for those beasts?

New job, few avian highlights (or time spent) in the yard have lessened my motivation for the yardbirding. Another month and I'll be back out there at least some trying to snag some of the neotrops I still need for the yardlist.

  3. Thanks. There are 2 accepted EUCD records for the UP and 7 for the State as a whole. The dove is .75 miles from our new house and 1.25 miles from our current house. A near miss for sure.

Like you, Im hoping for a little renewal - the new house has reduced the motivation to work the Swamp Lair, but more so the ridiculous lead Big Rig has amassed. The man has been working his Wheaties.
