2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Earth to AABO DABI, ANJOvy, and WWJDD

OK guys, what gives? Is it the vast lead I have amassed which has scared you away from posting? Update please!

  3. Other than being creeped out at the thought of spending Valentine's Day with you dirt bags (online), my recent silence is owing to one simple fact: Joe and you have clearly stolen all the cool birds from my yard. I'm not sure *how* you did it (force field? vodoo?). But I am sure *that* you did it. . . To summarize: we all know you're cheating, and we're in a holding pattern until you return some birds to our yards. So, to start things out, will you please send me a Varied Thrush? That would be a decent show of good will.

  4. Absolutely JD- it's on its way. Having been in the position of knowing I was going to lose, I know what consolation is like. I hope this helps.

On a serious note, I would be totally interested in seeing pics from your yard JD- I really have no idea what it looks like. Same for you AABO- how's about a summary post of your new digs? And SEFI too?

  5. Not single new species in the digs here in the last month. And in two weeks I leave the country for 21 days, so don't expect much from me until April...

  8. We've got a pretty cool set up. We live on 12 heavily wooded acres *in town*. I'm just two miles from campus, but our house is in the woods. And our property abuts greywalls golf course, and thence to the south trails, so our yard basically opens up to thousands of acres of woods. We have a small stream running through our property, with a few Brook Trout, Green Frogs, Red-backed Salamanders, various tree frogs, three species of snakes (not bad for living on the shores of Lake Superior), pretty good mammal diversity, and, well, you guys know the birds.

There's no grassland/open areas on our property, though, and no marsh areas. So ducks and shorebirds are almost nonexistent in our yard. Also, we're in the woods (hemlocks in the low areas, mostly hardwood and a few pines elsewhere), so our view of the sky is fairly limited (so while spring raptor watches from my driveway are pretty good--we're on a hill above the Lake--you only see each bird for a second or two before it gets lost behind the trees).

I have one photo on my website that gives a view of some of our woods (and my wife and kids--keep your comments to yourselves, ya savages); I'll post more soon:
