2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Lots of *talk*. . .

Lots of *talk* about Evening Grosbeaks. Well, here's an actual *photo* of an Evening Grosbeak, in my yard earlier this afternoon:

  1. Am I the only one who hasn't seen one of these beauts yet this fall? Beginning to think so! I need it for the yard and for Kent Co. Sunflower seeds are available on the feeder currently and waiting..

  2. Well. . . I was being a bit of a trash-talking smart ass in my post. This is the first E. Grosbeak I've had in my yard in about 18 months. And I live in the U.P.! Not an easy yard bird for most of us.

  3. I don't have it anywhere yet. I haven't chased any reports but I've been trying damned hard in Rock County...I think I have a good search strategy worked out though...stay tuned...

  4. I hear ya JD. Congrats on that.

And looking carefully at this bird, what a HONKER of a bill these things have- and the overall 'chunk' factor on the body proportions is striking!

  5. I've never had one in a yard and I've lived in the UP an embarrassing long time.

Nice push of BOWA and PIGR this fall -- probably old news but I've been gone for awhile.

What's with some Kent County kid spoiling Caleb's run for the roses. That blows - he should have been on the blog.

  6. Yeah Kat- and now he got RECR today (a bird I still don't have for the county!), so he is officially ahead of me by 1 species. Argh.

    1. Nice WHite Ibis avatar. Is that the UP bird?

    2. No. The UP bird didn't show itself long enough. I saw it briefly flying over a tree line. This bird is a Ft. DeSoto FL bird.
