2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Multiple Migrants

A continuous drizzle today made for some great migrants. Late this afternoon in one corner of the yard with thick vegetation, but open enough to sit and observe, I had 6 new fall birds: 2 AMRE, 1 CSWA, 2 WIWA, 1 NAWA, 2 WAVI (yr yrd bird 119) & 1 LEFL. (This was better land birding than I had with Prestby at WPBO yesterday.) The feeding flock also consisted of multiples of resident birds like BAOR, TUTI, BCCH, NOCA & WBNU. Earlier several CANG flew by providing another addition to my fall list. A YTVI stopped by the backyard water feature on Monday while I was in the UP at Pictured Rocks. It hasn't shown up again, but at least Mom and some other visiting birders got to enjoy it.

  1. Way to tighten up the warb war Rick! I lazily opted to stay dry today and only noticed a WAVI outside the window attracted by the feeding BCCHs... Glad you got to bird with Tom up at WPBO. Also, Curtis, where are you man? The reigning warb war champ is getting schooled out of the chocks...

  2. I'm sure there were more around than I found. More accommodating weather is in the works for tonight and tomorrow - at least in my neck of the woods. So, I'll be wet again tomorrow!

Oh, by the way, RUTU and BASA took me to 231 for the year in the county today. Anybody else year listing in their home counties?

  3. I'm definitely a big Walworth County life lister, my county year list has never been that important to me... I'm at 185 for the year in the county but I got two county birds this year in the form of Surf Scoter and the gallinule which takes me up to 269.

  4. Yeah if it weren't for Lake Geneva which pulls in nice winter gulls and huge concentrations of lingering waterbirds I wouldn't be nearly as well off. But even so, I've only had 1 LTDU, 1 BLSC, and 1 SUSC in over 8 years birding the county... And yeah the acid also helps a lot

  5. Yeah Dave both were from the breakwall at the Kalamazoo River mouth. The RUTU was on the pier and the BASA were two fly-by calling. Sean, pick-ups for my Allegan Co life list so far this year have been LEBI & CORA putting me at 281. That is a pretty impressive total you have for an inland county. Too bad thats not an alcid that helps a lot! Tom is a blast to bird with. I like his fowl mouth!
