2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

BOOYA- unexpected life yardbird

Finally one of my numerous late night attempts at calling in owls has paid off (why this didn't work sooner I have no clue). Had an EASO come right into the yard responding to, of all things, my Saw-whet tapes. Ran in and grabbed the mic and cassette deck but the bird was done singing by then and didn't come back. I think I am going to clean out the owl box in the backyard which has been taken over by Fox Squirrels, and see if i can get them to nest.

Life yardbird #117, yearbird #28. EAT IT!

  1. mmm, tasty EASOs, a decadent snack. I'll tell the several in my back yard to watch out for screech eaters like you.

  2. since I don't have a sense for your yard, what kind of wooded areas do you have in your yard...extensive forest? isolated woodlot? older neighborhood with mature trees?

Nice tick, for sure...I love EASOs. I'm going to be lazy and not look at the list but have you been successful with getting NSWOs to call from your yard?

a TOTAL mystery why I have not had success earlier, though I am guessing I am far enough north that not all suitable habitat is always occupied, contra what we see in the s. Lower Peninsula.

No luck with NSWO. It's an unlikely bird here, but a thick row of spruces NW of my yard about 0.4 miles could just possibly have one, maybe during migration, so I will continue to try throughout march and april when they're moving. The last expected owl is Barred, which I also don't understand. I know for a fact they are in the Rogue River coridor about 0.5 miles from my house, b/c I've kayaked it and seen them. But so far, no response to all my nighttime tape luring.

  4. I tried for this species several times before I left for FL in Jan. You bet I'll be trying tonight since I'm back.

Allegan Co. February big day planned for tomorrow. DASL, want to join in? Anybody is welcome for that matter.
