2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Here is an areal photo link to my land. Basically,
centered in the view (around the red "tack" google
marker) is the property, surronding
the creek on either side and south of the diagonal
road (rt. 656), its basically a
rectangular plot you can see by the tree lines, our
land goes behind the neighbor's house, and my
house is on the right/north east.
The fields just to the east of my house are also
part of the property. Also included in this post are
my front (w/ heated birdbath) and back feeder views,
then some views of the land. Its been pretty awesome
lately with so much snow. On the property I maintain
8 Bluebird Swallow boxes, and a kestrel box on the barn.
Other Nesters are Wild Turkey, Am. Woodcock,
Yellow-breasted Chat,Yellow-throated Warbler,
Yellow-throated Vireo, Warbling Vireo,
Ring-necked Pheasant, Screech Owl,
E. Kingbird, E. Phoebe, E. Meadowlark, Wood Duck and
some of the more common stuff.

  1. Not bad Warning! Looks like some nice sight lines for picking up those spring waterfowl and raptors!

  2. Yeah, I'm really looking forward to putting some actual effort into my flyby watching. Maybe I will hang out on the roof for even more mastery.

  3. How can I even compete with this? You should definitely work on your flyover skills...can we say MIKI? It'd be funny if you designated your roof as a hawk tower of sorts and fell off in the process of checking something fly over...

  4. Yeah, the way I see it is that its a competition for fun only, I mean, it'd be more fun for you to go for a personal best. And maybe then you'd quit fantasizing about me falling off the roof, you might want to seek help with your rage issues, haha! I think some of those guys up in the yoop and maybe this Rick guy will give me a real run for my money so to speak, so I've got my game face on. Just the same I'll wear a safety harness and rope if I go up there just so that I don't wind up in the hospital so you can come in and laugh at me. MIKI would be so cool.

  5. Ben, this comes as a real eye opener for me. Having been a wilderness snob sequestered away in pristine Northern Michigan for the past 20 years this photo essay comes as a complete surprise and forever alters my impression of central Ohio. It is much worse than I ever imagined. I'll take clear-cuts and six species of blood-sucking insects over that idyllic post-card scene any month of the year (except, so far, Jan and Feb).

  6. Gonna be tough to top the Warndog with habitat like that!

  9. Rock climbing is for wimps. You should learn a real sport, like figure skating or synchronized swimming

  10. I'll let you keep those there Sean. I'll stick with all the wimpy sports like mtn. biking, skiing, trail running, kayaking and rock climbing. Lets not forget the most extreme sport of all, extreme birding. yeehawww.
