2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Suck on this (Dendroica) pinus, Fitzy

Don't know whether this is a local post-breeding dispersal, or an actual migrant, but I was just shocked to see that the little brown streaked bird coming down to the water feature was not a juvenile House Finch, but instead a Dendroica with a yellowish head and breast. My first thought went to female/juv Blackpoll, but of course given the time of year and other field marks I immediately realized it was an adult male Pine Warbler, a long-awaited life yard bird (136/119). Unfortunately it bolted prior to my photographing it, and I was unable to track it down outside despite hearing it (also surprisingly) sing 3 times before I lost it. If it returns I will try to get a photo and post it.

And in case you didn't notice, Fitz-bew, you are now back behind me by one bird for the life competition...

  2. From HOFI to BLPW to singing CHSP! Yikes, I vote to reject until more convincing evidence (e.g. a poorly digibined shot) becomes available!

  3. Well played Mr. 97.5 for the year hotshot...

And for you Fitzy, come over some time and I'll help you sort out CHSP vs PIWA vocals. These things can be tough, no doubt.

  4. oh Putzy

when you compare the hours I have put in to get 97.5 species to the hours you have put in for 119, well, shit man- you still come out as a loser. You ain't that far ahead of me, and I still have a lot of gimmes yet to come, like Harris's Sparrow! Oh wait, thats right, you still need that bird for the State! Huh- you should try the Hacienda in October- its dang near annual!

  5. I must say that I concur with Sean and Skye - this sighting remains VERY suspect. Especially since you know Putnut sits with eyes glaring at his water feature ALL DAY LONG and his camera is alway at his side. How could he have conveniently "missed" getting a photo? Nice try Putz - you're just jealous that I have it on my list and you don't. Kind of like CARW, ROPI, YBSA, ACFL, PHVI, VEER, BWWA, CERW, MOWA, COYE, LISP, SWSP, RHWO and WWCR. Watch out everyone, Caleb may try to pull ANY of these out of his hat too.

  6. Pretty hilarious Curtis- listing out the 14 species you have that I don't while ignoring the 38 that I have and you don't. Does anybody care to know that he needs VESP for Kent Co. still, and is missing 5 of the 6 swallows for his yard?

And you Skye: somehow your *lack* of effort in the yardbird competition is a point in your favor here? Somebody help me out with this one...
