2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Eastern Phoebe

Had an Eastern Phoebe in my yard today. 21 March. 82 degrees. Just under a mile from Lake Superior. Not a trace of snow left on our property. End-of-times bizarre up here.

  1. Couldn't agree with the 'end of times' analogy more. We will be in full leaf out by early April, rather than mid May. I bet it is 5-6 weeks ahead of schedule.

  2. Get this: I had a Yellow-rumped Warbler in the yard yesterday. . . And the trails up here *are free of snow*. Deep in the woods. Usually doesn't completely melt until well into May. This year the snow was gone by mid-March. . . It's actually been a bit too muggy to sleep comfortably on some nights this past week. To say nothing about all the noise the spring peepers are making. On the shores of L. Superior. In March. . .

  3. That Yellow-rumped Warbler is the earliest for the County by several days!
