2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Heron sp.? strange CANG? something else?

First of all, even if we reach an ID, this is non-countable, so this is mainly of academic interest. But what the heck is this thing that just flew over my mic 5 minutes ago as I listened through the feed?

  1. Sounds like a Green Heron or Black-crowned Night-Heron.

  3. I think this sounds off for BCNH. I'd throw AMBI into the pool of possibilities.

  4. Bill Evans thinks BCNH is out, but AMBI is a possibility. Perhaps I should take a walk down to the marsh and see if I can find one? He also said it was possible it was something other than a bird. To me it certainly sounded like something overflying the house (farther at first, the second call closer to the mic)

  5. Guys- went over to Whitefish lake and was watching a group of Common Mergansers at close range when I heard basically this exact note uttered by one of them repeatedly. I heard duck wing whirs 5+ times last night in the dark, and there is a HUGE flock of Aythya, dabblers, and COME right now. I think COME is a very good candidate for this call.
