2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Whoa nelly

What is it with the HTML on this site?!?! (I cannot get it formatted correctly and I am trying hard). Anyway:

Here is what I woke up to (1 of at least 8-10 such flocks):
The first skein of which contained 1 Cackling Goose (58/89) (no pics)

Then the deluge began:
(59/90)
(61/92)
(62/93)

then had 6 flyby LESC (pics overexposed, 63/94), 1 flyby female HOME (no pics, 64/95), SOSP (65), and my first BHCO (66/96). Finally, 2 flyby LALOs were 67/97.

GET IT ON!

  1. Called RNDU in with dabs next... Were the LESC checking out the lake or high and cruising?

  2. The LESC, like the other divers at my latitude (RNDU the sole exception) refuse to land on the shallow marsh of Amazie. They were maybe 150ft up, just like the NOPI yesterday, and flying south. I suspect they checked out Whitefish Lake (still 100% frozen) and came south after realizing there was no place to put down.

  3. Sweetness! Do you realize you're #11 in the eBird yard list?!

(Nothing like stoking the engine of runaway train.)

  4. BTW - four of the birds you got today would be yard lifers for me: GWTE, HOME, GADW & RNDU!

  5. SEFI- yeah, I thought of you when I saw the single male RNDU out there- good call. Brigger- I am kind of surprised by those waterfowl being yard lifers for you! Then again, having a view of water is game-changing, and this is a good reminder for me. Just realized if I can nab NSHO and AMWI I'll have all the regular dabblers for my yard (BWTE should be pretty gimme later in the month). Anyway, no more trashtalk from me- this is pretty fun for me after suffering through the past couple years of high effort and low reward...

  6. Are you really going to fill up the blog this year with crappy photos?

    1. Haha - forgive him SWKI - he knows not what to do with such shocking seasonal totals.

  7. You know it, Kat. I don't want any doubters out there...

    1. I do think perhaps restricting your marginal photos to one per new species may be appropriate? Just a suggestion.
