2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

American Bittern

Had a vastly cool new yard bird early this evening: American Bittern. From the back end of our property, I heard it calling from a bog on the golf course (greywalls) that abuts our property, about 100 yards away. Even managed to get a crummy shot, which I'll post on Monday.

    that is a cool bird JD. I've had it a couple times here at the hill, but only as flyovers and I believe all in August. There was once a few years ago that there was a Bittern hanging out in the bush of that church right on Magnetic between 3rd and 4th!

    They say in Marquette I've always heard they occur in series of three. s occur in series of three.

    Awesome tick, JD. I want it here badly but it's going to be very tough to eek it out given the distance, the fact that it probably won't sing here, and that the most likely scenario is that it will fly around briefly at dusk if it is stopping over at the lake here. Congrats!
