2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

While listening to JOKA gloat about a bird he was watching at dusk in his yard on Lake Michigan which I struggle to find anywhere in my entire county (I'll let him break the news to you all), I reciprocated with this beaut just to maintain my lead: First visual sighting for the yard ever, and 2nd observation.

  1. Yeah, while Putty was ho-humming with a GHOW (mind you a bird I missed last year) I was taking him to the mat with a Snowy Owl.

I kicked off the new yard today (Chase Place) with 3 species -- in addition to the owl I had a MODO and 15 Swans.

  2. Are you going to make me go eke out some more species to keep you rabidly birding your yard in January SIPU?

  3. Yup, EASO just now (yard lifer in fact) ties it up. And I'll work hard to nab a few things in the AM which I know are around, like BRCR, MALL, WWCR, NOFL, BAEA, SSHA, SACR, RBGU, CEDW, etc. So go ahead and try; this competition is mine until migration begins.

  4. Crap. EASO is the only owl I have a serious chance for in my yard. The previous owners had a Barred Owl once in their ten years here (not that I'm as skilled as they are; I am a mere professional).

  5. Don't you miss Ben W., this was always his month?
