2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

GD YRD BRD - LIGU

Had a couple of nice slugs of Bonie's last night off Lake Michigan and wouldn't you know they both had Little Gulls; the first group of 34 had 2 including a 1st Summer bird and the second set of 184 had one.  The birds were fairly distant but the lighting was phenominal -- late afternoon sun against gray storm clouds.  It really made the birds pop.  I would probably had let the youngster go had it not gone into flight display with the adult.  I had suspected it a LIGU based on size and the bold pattern across the wing coverts but when it displayed with the adult it made me a believer.

  1. Wow Kat- that is a throw down yard bird the rest of us will NOT be getting! Probably ever. Right up there with TOSO (zip it, Haas).

Last night at about 1:30-3AM I spent the whole time listening and taping for nocturnal goodies, and unfortunately had not a single one. Down the road in Newaygo Co about 1 mile from the house I had a migrating BBCU (FOS) which did not come to my house, and the conditions for EWPW last night were marvellous, just no bird... Still waiting for LEBI, MAWR, COGA (not a gimme).

And I won't tell you what my landlord and neighbor insists he had on his feeder 2 days ago while I was out of town. If true and I get it, I can only say no one else will have a change to win the 2012 rarity yardbird competition. Even PRAF would pale in comparison. Here's hoping this happens today...
