2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Female Connecticut Warbler

Had the incredible good fortune of having a female CONW flush up and sit in front of me at a range of 15 feet this morning. I unfortunately didn't have my camera with but while I was watching the bird walk along branches and look at me, I fumbled through my phones menu and was able to get one photo through my binocs before a chipmunk freaked out and startled the CONW back into deep brush. Here is what I think might be the world's worst CONW photo ever (I tried to adjust the contrast and exposure as much as I could in iPhoto but alas the orriginal photo was only 32k from my phone...):

Had a grand total of 1 COYE, 2 TEWA, 1 MAWA, 1 AMRE, 1 CONW, and 1 NOPA for the morning.

  1. I think I'd be inclined to believe you a bit more if your photo actually had a BIRD in it. What are you on Sean?!

  2. Went back out this morning with my camera and optimistically beat the brush for about 50 feet all around where the bird was last seen yesterday but had no luck. Actually, I barely even got a single warb species today (AMRE). 1 GC and Swainson's Thrushes were the only other migrants.
Curtis - it's just a little bit to the left of the WEWA hanging under the dead oak leaf cluster and kitty-corner to the SWWA in the understory below.
