2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Think Big

Starting to think of birds that would top Fitz's PRFA. For me, it's Zone-tailed Hawk (1 previous record for Mesa County...., so it's not impossible). What are you guys gunning for? If you don't think big, it'll never happen. Just ask Silly Putty about Little Gull...

Picked up Wood Duck (pair fly-by) Friday evening, #33.

  1. I must admit to thinking that my orange feeder would look real nice with a Hooded Oriole on it.....

  5. I always thought that Allen's Hummingbird at my feeder in October had a nice ring to it.

  6. Dream on posers. And notice how all of your birds require feeders? I know of a rat-like CITE that's frequenting feeders at a park in Chicago that I could dump off in one of your bird baths that most IL birders would still count as good. Thoughts!?

  7. I'd settle for a Hoary Redpoll, but I dream of Kirtland's Warbler in the yard.

  8. Within the horizon of "realistically conceivable": Gyrfalcon.

Directly on the horizon: one of our U.P. boreal specialties that basically never venture down from the high country, e.g., Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, or Black-backed Woodpecker (with the third species being most likely).

Beyond the horizon: Plate-billed Mountain Toucan.
