2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

the lake competition

I like this idea Ben, its time to tally up our lake counts- how do we do it? With in a mile or half a mile from the lake? Quarter? In eyeshot?

Thoughts?

  1. Yeah, I'd say within a mile of the lakeshore of your chosen Lake. I'll start counting. Might take a while.

  3. Oh and how could I forget Smith's Longspur?!

There should be 3 different eider sp sightings as well.

  4. Oh and Slacker, whats your Lk. Mich List?

  5. BEWA seems a mite reticent after Skylark's big post. Have to admit, that is going to be difficult to top!

  6. Ahh, well I had to go work. I haven't counted it up yet, but yeah, he's gone and beat me probably, thats an impressive tally. But I still might have a chance against you michlisters. Count 'em up.

  7. How long you been working on that list man? Thats awesome. How close do you live to the lake? I'm 2 hours away, so bear that in mind, I know, I'm making lame excuses.

  8. But whats with the Eider Sp id's? Whats that count for, how you can't ID a bird if it was sitting right in the 21 foot close focus of your bushnell porros?

  9. Well, in the winter, when the leaves are down, I can just see a sliver of Superior out my back bathroom window.
As for how long, I've birded these shores for a long time, but if I had to set a date where I had a species for the first time without any future repeats it would be fall 2001 (Oh Long-tailed Jaeger- when will you fly past me again???)
As for the eider ID's, thats what I like to call cautious optimism!

All right Lesser Lake listers- cards down on the table! I want to see if I can beat the Lake Michiganders at their own game!

    "clink" here's to Superior!

  10. My Lake Michigan tally is a mere 288 highlighted by (all WI unless otherwise noted):
BBWD, EUWI, CITE, BAGO, PALO, WEGR (3 WI, 1 IN), SNEG, LBHE, YCNH, PUSA, BBSA, REPH, SAGU (IN), LAGU, MEGU (2 dif Counties in WI), CAGU (IL), PAJA (1 WI, 6+ IN), LTJA (IN), ANMU (MI), WWDO, WEKI, NOMO, BOWA, CERW, LOWA, YBCH, LARB, NESP.
I actually don't bird the lakefront much between April and October so I'm missing quite a few relatively easy species...

  11. I spose the PAJA from MI at the ANMU spot this fall should be included too.

  12. you are such a slacker, you're just afraid that after disrespecting Lake Erie you're not going to be able to compete. Sad, very sad. You're always talking bout birding lake MI. And skipping birding the other day to study spanish? I'm going to come over to your place and slap you. Thats what I'm going to do.

  13. Alright, so in I come with only 289 species for my lake list, of course If I lived near the shore I'd have much more, but I think 289 for a guy who lives two hours away isn't too shabby. So come on Dave, surely a guy like you who lived practically right beside Lake MI could beat this paltry sum.
