2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Spring is early at the Putnut residence

Just looked outside, naked eye, and was astonished to see a Golden-crowned Kinglet foliage gleaning in the black oak! Normally I have to wait until March for that bird. Note that other than Warning, who lives somewhere near the Tropic of Cancer, if I remember right, I am the only one with this species for 2010... Couldn't manage a pic before it left, unfortunately.

    I've seen more Gicki's this winter up here in the taiga than RB Nuts. You may not of realized this, but if you turn to the back of your Peterson Guide there are (oh my gosh!) range Maps!!!

    Yeah, but then he'd have to know which state is which. Yours is the one shaped like a left handed mitten.

    Range maps? Birds that don't come to feeders? States shaped like mittens? Slow down!! Slow down. Can ... not ... keep ... up.

    So let me get this straight. If a bird is regular in winter in my part of the state, it is by extension also regular in my yard in the winter? Please help eduficate me.
