So I got 2+ more inches of snow this morning (with more falling!). Oh so fleeting the early Yooper spring. A ton of early season sparrows have flooded in (Trees, Songs, Juncos). With them has arrived a nice-looking Oregon Junco. I'll try to get a pic sometime today and post it up.
I'm hoping this storm brings in my first Fox Sparrow of the season as well..... or a Varied Thrush!

Hey- Fox Sparrow just showed up- still snowing......
2013 and beyond
It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.
2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

?? pending acceptance??!! did you think this was a rare bird?!
ReplyDeleteI'm stunned by that Slager. I had one at the WI home on a CBC back in 05 or 06.
ReplyDeleteActually, MBRC has never gone through and reviewed all of our strange junco subspecies, Oregon included, though we might in the future if someone steps up to do the analysis. You all might remember Michigan's craziest junco (and craziest birds of all time), Skye's Gray-headed Junco from Marquette several springs back. Skye- maybe you could dig out some photos of that gem while you're at it?
ReplyDeleteyo yard-birders- I had to leave for MiBCI before I could get a shot of the junco (sadly I am sitting right next to Putz-nutz right now).
ReplyDeleteBut when I return to MQT, I will get some photos up of the UP's rich non Slate-colored Junco history (3 subspecies so far.....)
oh thats the problem with listers....
ReplyDeletean incredible find like GHJU gets no recognition- despite being only the 3rd record east of the Great Plains! It was awesome, it was actually on the first morning of field ornithology so my classmates got to see what an f-ing freak I was right out the gate. I had seeded a brushy area that was good for sparrows before class- just imagine my shock when that Junco flew down in front of me and started to feed! I swear- I got weak in the knees
