2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Fitzy moving up

Wow, Sean, very impressed with the 17 yardbirds in a day! You're damn near taking the lead outright. Latitude and lack of lake effect continue to set me back compared to Chewy and Fitzy, but I do think that with time my habitat should give me an advantage over Sean.

Today I had several new ones: Mute Swan (tough for anybody else but Kaps and Rick, I'd bet), GREATER YELLOWLEGS (silent flyby right after the passing of a front system when a lot of birds took flight), White-crowned Sparrow, 2 Black-throated Greens, Ovenbird, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and 2 Green Herons which flew by in the morning.

Skye- I still find it crazy what a huge proportion of your yearbirds are also yard lifers! A sign of past (lack of) effort, perhaps. Here's hoping for another large flight tonight...

  1. Two days Putz. And I had good weather for knocking migrants down into my sub-prime habitat both nights. I have tomorrow off too, hopefully some more nice warbs drop in that I can cash in. I had another flyover Lesser legs this morning that called several time before passing over (the torrential rain made yesterday's ideal water levels way too high for shorebirds; 2 SOSA, 1 SPSA were the only shorebirds on the edge this AM). I think that flyover shorebirds are probably one of the coolest yardbirds out there.

  3. Lucky dogs! I haven't been able to get out much this weekend. After two nights of storms hardly anything has shaken out of the heavens. Nothing new today. A calling fly-over SOSA pre-dawn and a single BTNW post-dawn were it for yesterday. Mom did have a GCFL yesterday while I was at work, but it didn't stick for me when I checked at the end of the day.

It'll be fun to see where you end up tomorrow, Sean, with another day open to bird.

Surprisingly, MUSW is not on my all-time yard list yet, Putter.
