2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Wastelands Gets a Picidae

I have returned and yes indeed...I can now say that woodpeckers do occasionally make forays into The Wastelands. I had a single NOFL (#34/44) bust south (not north?) over the yard this morning. My hypothesis: the neighbor's radioactive playground equipment is working its magic.

I may still have a chance at a distant DOWO if I get lucky with scoping a few the available tree crowns to the north horizon. Maybe my only other woodpecker possibility is RHWO this spring?

Hey Dykstra...looks like I'm gaining on you again...::diabolic laughter::

  1. Yeah, but YBSA is a quality tick for the Slag Slab.

  2. Catch me!? I stand on the precipice of such a flow of birds that the likes of your yard will NEVER see!
I saw my FOS RCKI today, but not in my yard yet. WTSP and YRWA should be soon as well. My transient YBSAs were on the tree next to my garage today.

  3. Wastelands? Wastelands?
Note my total, and also that, even now that Great Spotted Woodpecker has gained a small foothold as a breeding bird in eastern counties of Ireland (after there being NO breeding woodpeckers until the last decade), my tiny garden surrounded by concrete 'gardens' is most unlikely to ever attract ANY woodpecker...Wryneck, I suppose, is a VERY long shot in autumn, but there's only been around 2 records away from the coast ever in Ireland, and the species is a scarcity even at the headlands and islands.
