2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

WOW unexpected Woodcock!

BOOYA! I stumbled upon a couple MORE new year birds...
As I'm talking to Putnut on the phone I check the yard shrubs for Song Sparrow (score! #28). Then I walked a little further into the woodlot and saw something move 4' from me on the ground. I looked down and saw in perfect lighting against the leaf litter an American Woodcock (#29). 1/2 second later it flushed but is sure to be trapped somewhere in the woodlot for the rest of the day (nowhere else to go). AWESOME!
Oh, and added 2 more day birds (RTHA, and HAWO) making 24 for 3/17/10 so far.
Side note: Harry & Aaron, sorry for passing you both by today. But I must admit both of you have made a great showing for these first months of the year! Keep it up!
One more thing - SOS for Edmund Fitzgerald...you're about to sink!

  1. No need to apologise, Curtis, I may be going to lose, but I'll be the only one to log garden records of Eurasian Blackbird, Song Thrush, Redwing, Fieldfare, Blackcap, Grey Wagtail etc etc...heck, pretty much everything except House Sparrow, Eurasian Starling, Feral Pigeon and perhaps some of the flyover gulls.

  2. Very true Harry! I'm glad that most everything you get is "rub-it-in-our-faces" good.
Well, I don't know why it's taken this long for this city slick'n bird to fly over my abode, but I FINALLY nailed Rock Pigeon (30) which ties me up with the Fritz.

  3. That's the spirit Hussey. Gray Wagtail looks like one of the coolest species ever from the books anyway. Wagtail sp would be a lifer for me still!

  4. Yeah, Curtis, and had you been following the blog any time in the past month, you would have known about the sidebar issue. You can lead a horse to water...

  5. Harry, isn't today a special day for your people? I tried to celebrate with a Greenshank but I think it's still a little too early.

  6. Nice snag Dykstra...could you paint a picture for us in terms of the context of your yard? A woodlot but a woodlot in an urban setting? If so, definitely impressive. This post reminds me of a friend of mine that lives in Columbus...crazy stuff coming to his honeysuckle hedge...PROW, AMWO....

  7. Aaron - it's a woodlot about a football field large (give or take) surrounded by urban. It acts like a funnel to anything migrating overhead - it's the only piece of decent habitat for a good distance.
Oh, and about the sidebar. I saw some of the comments about that, but was there a resolution as to what causes it and how to prevent it? If so, I DID miss that. Sorry!

  8. The sidebar deal is hit or miss. So far, I have a 75% chance that spacing will get all jacked. I've basically stopped messing with editing the sidebar because I have precious little time as it is just to even post messages.

Curtis...do you have lat/long coordinates for your yard? I'd like to see. Speaking of which, I volunteer to create an interactive Google Maps of everyone's yard location. We can hyperlink it somewhere on the sidebar. So, start sending me your mailing addressed and/or coordinates and I'll be more than happy to get going on this. Send them to my email address so I can keep track of them and I'll get crackin'

  10. Hey I'm a bit apprehensive of putting too much personal info on this blog (the amount of spam I get on my other blog is ridiculous, you may want to remove the email address Boone). Anyone who searches our names online will have all of this information pop up. I'd vote to not have the interactive map linked on the sidebar, or maybe a link but viewable by invite only...

  15. Geeze...you guys sound like my mother with this whole internet privacy thing...KIDDING!!!!

Yeah, it was late last night and I just wasn't thinking about privacy issues. But it's agreed, probably not a good idea. I'll just have to ask each of you individually for location details so that I can place your yards in context with the rest of us.
