2013 and beyond

It's pretty simple: the most birds seen or heard from one's yard during 2013 will be the "winner". Want in? O.k....then do it despite that.

2013 promises to be a lot less mean but still a carbon-free birding competition, even if slightly less exciting than a MEGA x EPIC hybrid.

Swamp Kat Lair

Took a hint from Big Rig on the attributes of having a horizon. Mine has been obscured by King Kattail (it looks like corn but it's Typhus) -- all better now. The white stuff on the horizon is solid Lake Michigan, the U.S. Coast Guard starts breaking it up tomorrow. Anymore description would feel like boasting. We'll see what the thaw brings - the Kitty can't wait to hunt ducks!

Canada Goose yesterday and Robin through the yard today -- also a drake pintail just down the bay 1.5 miles in a small patch of open goodness. Red-wings can't be that far behind, huh?

Dividends; just did a little night flight and picked up an early Ghost (NOHA) and 2 un ducks.

  1. So, again we find ourselves conflicted over whether to bow at the feet of the most intense yardbirder ever (damn dude, rock on!), or to point out that such a structure is necessary in order for this guy to be able to identify stuff he would have otherwise only heard. Hmmmm. Tough call.

On another note I added MALL yesterday (right before the international space station passed overhead for the 2nd straight evening). Then today I had my neighbor call me to tell me SACR were bugling overhead, but alas I was not home at the time. But it will certainly happen soon enough. I did hit Lake MI and picked up AMWI, SACR, RWBL, COGR, GBHE, GWTE, and 3000 LTDU.

  3. Now that is absolutely cool! Very inviting with the addition of the chairs. I was contemplating how to build a platform for the roof while I was sitting on it this afternoon. Once the leaves pop here all I'll have to look at is up. My imagination is running wild looking at your broad horizons.

Joe, red-wings are coming through in good numbers today. Couldn't go anywhere here without seeing or hearing them. Tallied 23 on the property alone this morning and 7 COGR.
